Abstract

In integral calculus, the use of formulas and integration techniques is very often implemented. This study presents dynamic activities to teach the integral as accumulation using GeoGebra software. This software allows to work with the different semiotic representations proposed by Duval. Implementing the proposed activities using GeoGebra, we analyzed: ¿how is the students´ understanding of the concept of integral as accumulation? Also, we focused on how is the students´ interaction with the different semiotic representations using GeoGebra? And how students perceive the use of GeoGebra during their integral calculus course? Based on the qualitative methodology, two mathematical problems were asked to solve for identifying the students’ understanding and their use of GeoGebra. In addition to explore the students´ perceptions, a semi structured interview was conducted. We found that proposed activities supported the students’ understanding of the concept of integral as accumulation. Using GeoGebra, students were capable of shifting among the different semiotic representations of the problems and their perceptions of the use of GeoGebra were the efficacy to verify solutions and the confidence gained by the students.
